Maybe you've been together 3 years. Or maybe 23. But somewhere along the way, something shifted. The person who used to be your favorite human now feels like a roommate you keep arguing with about dishes and schedules.

You lay in bed at night wondering: Is this it? Can we fix this? Or have we just grown apart?

Here's what most couples don't know: The arguments about money, kids, or chores aren't actually about money, kids, or chores. They're about feeling disconnected, unheard, or unloved.

Good news? That's exactly what couples counseling is designed to fix. Not by picking sides or telling you who's "right." But by helping you both understand what's really going on beneath the surface—and giving you real tools to reconnect.

At South Denver Therapy, our couples therapist Kayla Crane, LMFT works exclusively with relationships. This isn't a side service she offers. It's her entire focus. And that makes a real diffrence in the results couples see.

Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

You're not alone. These are the exact things couples tell us in their first session.

💬 "We Can't Talk Without Fighting"

Every conversation turns into an argument. You've stopped bringing things up because you know how it ends. The silence feels safer than the fighting.

🏠 "We Feel Like Roommates"

You share a house, maybe kids, definitely bills. But the spark? The connection? It feels like that left a long time ago.

💔 "Trust Has Been Broken"

Whether it was infidelity, lies, or broken promises—you're not sure you can get past it. But part of you wants to try.

👶 "Since Kids, We Lost Us"

Parenting took over everything. You're great co-parents but you've forgotten how to be partners. Date nights feel like a distant memory.

🔄 "Same Fight, Different Day"

You know exactly how the argument will go before it even starts. Different topic, same pattern, same hurt feelings. Nothing ever gets resolved.

😔 "I Feel Alone in This Marriage"

You're techncally together but you feel completely alone. Like your partner doesn't really see you or understand what you need.

Why Work With a Relationship Specialist?

Here's something most people don't realize: Most therapists are generalists. They see individuals, kids, couples, families—a little bit of everything. And while they're good at what they do, couples therapy is a completely different skill set.

Kayla Crane, LMFT is different. She works only with couples. Her entire caseload, all her training, every hour of her practice is dedicated to helping relationships heal and grow stronger.

  • SART Certified – Specialized training in Systematic Affair Recovery to help couples heal from infidelity
  • Relational Life Therapy – A direct, no-nonsense approach that gets results faster than traditional talk therapy
  • 100% Couples-Focused – Unlike generalist therapists, Kayla works exclusively with couples and relationships
  • Real-World Tools – You leave every session with practical skills you can use that same night

How Couples Counseling Works

No awkward silences or vague advice. Here's exactly what to expect when you work with us.

1

Free 15-Minute Consultation

Before anything else, we hop on a quick call. This is your chance to ask questions, share what's going on, and make sure we're the right fit. No pressure, no commitment.

2

First Session: Understanding Your Story

In your first session, we dig into the history of your relationship. What brought you together? When did things start to shift? What patterns keep showing up? This helps us see the full picture.

3

Individual Sessions (Sometimes)

Depending on your situation, we might meet with each of you individually for a session. This gives both partners space to share things they might not feel comfortable saying in front of each other—yet.

4

Active Work Together

This is where the real work happens. We'll identify the negative cycles keeping you stuck, build new communication skills, and practice them right in session. You'll leave with homework to try at home.

5

Building Your New Normal

As you practice new skills and break old patterns, we space sessions out more. The goal isn't to be in therapy forever—it's to give you tools that work so you don't need us anymore.

What You'll Get From Couples Counseling

Real changes you'll actually feel in your day-to-day life together.

Better Communication

Learn to say what you mean without it turning into a fight. Actually feel heard by your partner for maybe the first time in years.

Deeper Connection

Rediscover the emotional intimacy that made you fall for each other in the first place. Feel like a team again instead of opponents.

Rebuilt Trust

Whether trust was broken by infidelity or smaller betrayals over time, learn the steps to rebuild it in a way that actually lasts.

Healthier Conflict

Disagreements are normal. But they don't have to be destructive. Learn how to fight fair and actually resolve issues instead of recycling them.

Tools That Last

We don't just talk about your problems. You leave every session with practical techniques you can use immediately. No vague advice here.

More Joy Together

Remember when spending time together was actually fun? That feeling isn't gone forever. Couples counseling can help you find it again.

Common Issues We Help Couples Work Through

Questions About Couples Counseling

Do you accept insurance?
We're a private-pay practice and don't bill insurance directly. Here's why: Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis and often limit what kind of treatment you can receive. We'd rather focus on what's best for your relationship without those restrictions. That said, we accept HSA/FSA cards and can provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. We've also partnered with Mentaya to help you check your benefits—there's a tool on our FAQs page to see if you're eligible.
How long does couples counseling take?
It really depends on what you're working through. Some couples see real progress in 8-12 sessions. Others with more complex issues (like recovering from infidelity) might work together for 6 months or longer. Most couples start with weekly sessions, then space them out as things improve. We'll give you a realistic timeline after learning more about your situation.
What if my partner doesn't want to come?
This is super common. A lot of couples start with just one partner coming in. Sometimes that's enough to shift the dynamic at home and get the other person interested. We also offer individual therapy where you can work on your side of the relationship while we figure out next steps.
Do you offer virtual couples counseling?
Yes! We see couples in-person at our Castle Rock office and via secure video throughout Colorado. Many couples actually prefer virtual sessions—no commute, no babysitter needed, and you can both join from wherever you are. It works just as well as in-person for most couples. Learn more about our online therapy options.
Is everything we say confidential?
Absolutely. What happens in session stays in session. We're bound by law to keep everything confidential, with only a few rare exceptions (like if someone's safety is at risk). You can be completely honest without worrying about it going anywhere.
What if we're not sure we want to stay together?
That's actually pretty common. If you're on the fence about your relationship, we offer discernment counseling—a short-term process designed specifically for couples who aren't sure whether to work on things or call it quits. It gives you clarity and confidence about the path forward.
